Standing Seam Metal Roof
What makes a standing seam metal roof so convenient is that it can be fabricated on the jobsite in just a couple of days and then last for the life of the home.
The attributes of a standing seam metal roof are pretty impressive. They are very durable and long lasting, resistant to fire, they require very little maintenance
and they fit over many existing roof materials. You can get a standing seam metal roof in all kinds of colours and styles as well.
A standing seam metal roof consists of many interlocking panels that go vertically from the ridge of the roof to its eave. The seam where the two interlocking panels
are joined is raised a bit above the roof's surface. This allows the water to run off, so there's no seeping between the panels.
A standing seam metal roof can come in many different shapes, sometimes they are cut to length at the factory and then delivered to the working site, other times they are custom made right on the job site.
There are two commonly used types of methods to secure the panels of a standing seam metal roof by attaching them to the roof sheathing.
The first consists of hidden fasteners which are secured to a raised portion of the pane, then covered by the next panel during the installation.
The second method makes use of exposed fasteners which fit through each metal panel right into the sheathing of the roof.
The basics of installing a standing seam metal roof are as follows:
- First, the standing seam metal roof is fabricated on the working site.
- Next, every single section of the standing seam metal roof is customized to the required length. To form the interlocking panels, a specific type of machine is used, a shaping machine, also called a brake.
- Then, a large shear is used to cut all the panels to the correct length, without causing damage to the ends of the panels. All it takes is a very small amount of hand trimming and after that,
the panels are formed and then cut to the proper length. This barely takes a few minutes and afterwards, the panels are ready to be installed.
- In order to make everything waterproof, the different roof elements are installed in a specific order. First, they use roofing paper, which gets installed over the sheathing of the roof.
Then, the angles of the roof are covered and finally, a ridge cap is used to cover the peak of the standing seam metal roof.
- Every roof panel that runs from the ridge right to the eave fits nicely into the ridge vent. Strong metal clips are then used to secure each panel to the roof sheathing. To create a more
refined and polished look, hidden fasteners can be used.
- Afterwards, all the separate roof panels are joined together. This happens in a certain order, so that all the roof panels hide the clips that secure the adjacent panel. This way,
the fasteners are also not exposed to the elements of nature.
- Finally, the standing seam metal roof is finished, ready to last for a very long time.
